Ambrogio Lorenzetti: The Palazzo Pubblico, Siena
by Randolph Starn
From 1338-40, Ambrogio Lorenzetti painted one of the pioneering fresco cycles of the early Renaissance: the three large murals on the walls of the meeting room of the Nine Governors in Siena's Palazzo Pubblico (town hall). These frescoes represent the effort by Siena's city council to integrate its diverse social groups harmoniously under the aegis of republican virtue. They comprise one of the consumate political statements in the history of Western art, and have long been considered a masterpiece of secular drawing. This volume beautifully reproduces them, and includes a glossary as well a bibliography and a diagram of the cycle. This book is part of George Braziller, Inc.'s series The Great Fresco Cycles of the Italian Renaissance.
