Maurice Prendergast: Large Boston Public Garden Sketchbook
by Maurice Prendergast
This exquisite volume reproduces for the first time the entire Large Boston Public Garden Sketchbook of Maurice Prendergast, one of the leading artists of the American Impressionist school. Each page reproduces recto and verso of the original in its true dimensions. Predergast completed the sketchbook between 1857 and 1897, after he had returned from France, where he received his first formal training as an artist. Strongly influenced by the work of Bonnard, Vuillard, and other members of the Nabis group, he soon adapted in his own way their color, effects of light and shadow, and decorative textures. By the end of his career, he was known as a forceful watercolorist and it is in this delicate medium that Prendergast recaptures the genteel life of late nineteenth century Boston. The sketchbook is part of the Robert Lehman Collection of the Metrpolitan Museum of Art.
