Pieri Della Francesca: San Francesco, Arezzo
by Marilyn Aronberg Lavin
Piero della Francesca (1413?-1492) painted his masterpiece in fresco on the chancel walls of the church of San Francesco in Arezzo. Based on a complex compilation of legend and history, the scenes tell the Story of the True Cross, the sacred wood of Christ's Cross, from the time of Genesis through the reign of Solomon, to the period after the Crucifixion when it began to work miracles. Inspired by his deep knowledge of mathematics and his admiration for Plato's theory of ideal forms, Piero structured images around pure geometric shapes to lend an air of permanence and timelessness to each scene. This volume presents these exquisite images beautifully. This book is part of George Braziller, Inc.'s series The Great Fresco Cycles of the Italian Renaissance.
