The Thirty-six Immortal Women Poets
by Andrew J. Pekarik
The Thirty-six Immortal Women Poets were a group of women poets and novelists who flourished in the imperial court of Japan from the ninth to the thirteenth centuries, and who have long been considered to be among the most important writers in the history of Japan. This book is the reproduction of an album by Chobunsai Eishi (1756-1829) that presents fictional portraits of the women, along with examples of their work. Although the portraits were imaginary depictions, the albums served as rich sources of instruction for new poets, historical documentations, and new artistic works in and of themselves.
