Hiroshige: Birds & Flowers
by Cynthea Bogel & Israel Goldman

This beautiful book features 91 "bird and flower" prints by the great ukiyo-e master, selected from the Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Collection at the Museum of Art, Rhode Island School of Design. Never before published, the selection includes well-known prints, as well as rare and uniques examples of Hiroshige's work in this genre. Shunning the popular tradition of courtesan subjects from his middle age on, Hiroshige concentrated solely on landscape and nature works for which he had a special affinity. During the decade of the 1830's, Hiroshige created some 5000 bird and flower studies. The genre itself was one of the most venerable in the hiearchy of subjects in Oriental art; it was developed during the Northern Sung period in China, and became popular in Japan after the emperor gave it the official approval.
