On a Riverboat Journey
by Hiroshi Onishi
A masterpiece of 18th century printmaking, On a Riverboat Journey was created by the renowned Japanese artist Ito Jakuchu. This handscroll, measuring 468 inches long, is reproduced here in its entirety in album format. The album records images of a misty landscape from the journey of Jakuchu and the poet Taiten down the Yodo River. During the 1760's, Jakuchu began to feel that monochromatic painting could convey even more excitement than the use of color. This reproduction, meticulously reproduced in subtle shades of black, white, and gray, captures both the lively flair and the delicate gradations of tones in the original. Each of Taiten's provacative poems is translated especially for this edition by Dr. Hiroshi Onishi, and are remarkable not only for their conent, but for the masterful calligaphy with which they are executed.
