Karan
by B. Wongar
In Karan a young man who is well assimilated into the white world must confront his aboriginal "karan" (soul). Anawari has been educated in white schools, lives with a white woman, and has a good job at the tribal Research and Assimilation Center. But one morning he awakens to discover tribal marks mysteriously cut into his chest. Through his efforts to understand these marks, he discovers that the Center is actually hunting down aborigines to use them in gruesome, genetic experiments. Anawari's rebellion and escape -- a tortuous journey through the desert to ancestral lands -- gradually cleanse him of his white mentality and result in his final transformation.
