The Struggle: A History of the ANC
by Heidi Holland

In this first comprehensive popular history of the ANC, Heidi Holland chronicles the organization's evolution from 1912 to the present, with a special focus on the personal experiences of Nelson Mandela and Oliver Tambo. The ANC began as an organization dedicated to the removal of racial discrimination in South Africa by the peaceful means advocated by Mahatma Gandhi. Since the early ANC drew its support from the idealogicallyincompatible anarchists, communists, and conservatives, it operated only sporadically when its members came together to protest a new piece of legislation. Only gradually, in the face of increasingly repressive and discriminatory legislation, did the ANC come to argue that South Africa is a country that belongs to blacks, and only when confronted with governmental violence did it call for violent resistence. Based largely on interviews with leading ANC officials and their families, The Struggle is a unique record of the individuals behind the organization that eventually built South Africa's first black government.
