The Donner Party
by George Keithley
The Donner Party was the largest group to take part in the western migration up until the year 1846. It is now remembered chiefly, though, for the suffering and cannibalism which resulted when the party was trapped in the snow of the Sierras without provisions for the winter. In this narrative poem, George Keithley has created an epic of that courageous and ill-fated journey. Wrote Harper's, "It's the best long poem that I've read. Keithley has got the exact voice, the right pace, and he underplays the horror details in such a way that the human experience underneath the horror comes through."
